MUSIC LESSONS THAT WE OFFER

GUITAR

LESSONS

Guitar Lessons

Monster Music guitar lessons are perfect for kids of all ages, from little beginners to more advanced players. For the younger ones, we recommend starting with a smaller-sized guitar you can grab at Music Planet on Riccarton Road. Our lessons are led by friendly musicians who really enjoy working with kids. We've crafted a special learning journey that kicks off with a cool white wristband and moves through a series of custom books, kind of like karate belts but for guitar players at Monster Music! You'll learn awesome songs by your favorite singers and bands as part of the fun curriculum. Plus, there are lots of chances to show off what you've learned at events like busking, concerts, school assemblies, and even gigs at local spots. Beginners usually start in small groups with kids their age and skill level, but we can sometimes do private lessons too, depending on the circumstances!

  • The lesson fees are listed below. Please feel free to check out our full page of lesson fees here!

    • $90 per month for 30 minute small group class (between 2 and 4 students)

    • $102 per month for 20 minute private lesson

    • $134 per month for 30 minute private lessons

  • Other than the lesson fees, you only need to pay for 8 learning books priced at $20 each. But don't worry, you won't have to buy them all at once. Students generally take at least four years to work through these, so the price will be spread out

  • Students that are learning guitar (or ukulele) will be required to have their own instrument that they can a) bring to their lessons and b) practice with at home. You can purchase a new guitar for a great price at Music Planet on Riccarton Road. Just mention that your child is learning with Monster Music and they will even give you a sweet discount!

  • In most Monster Music schools, we offer guitar lessons to students of all ages. However we recommend that 5 and 6 year old students start with ukulele then transition to guitar when they turn 7.

However we do teach many 5 and 6 year olds guitar as well! It just depends on the child's size and ability.

The most important thing to think about is that they need to remember their lesson time (having a basic alarm watch is a great idea!)

  • Generally, Monster Music guitar lessons happen at your child's school. The only exception to this, is if your child doesn't attend a school that Monster Music operates in. In this case, the lessons will be held at a studio location in Papanui.

  • This is a hard one! It really depends on the size and age of your child.

However for beginners, we generally recommend a 1/2 or 3/4 size nylon string guitar. These guitars are easy on the fingers and are generally a good size for young guitar players.

We always recommend going into the music store to get their advice too. They will be able to sit your child down and make a recommendation.

  • Absolutely! We will always try our very best to group guitar students up with their buddies. Please let us know via email (office@monstermusic.nz) and we will see what we can do.

  • Our guitar groups have between two and four students. We always make sure that each group consists of students of a similar age and skill level. At the end of each school term, we often reassess the groups and make changes based off the tutors recommendation.

  • We sometimes offer one on one/private lessons but it really depends on the circumstances. If a group session doesn't seem practical for your child, just let us know and we will always try our best to get them into a private lesson spot! These are generally reserved for children with quite a lot of playing experience already.
